Bad Habits to Quit in Order to Become a Successful Muslim

22 May 2024

Everyone wants to achieve success and it is the utmost priority of all but a Muslim desires success not just in this world but also in Afterlife. Success is determined by our attitude toward life and how we respond to different scenarios especially our habits. People usually think that aiming for achievement in Duniya may jeopardize their achievement in Akhira. Rather than being afraid of it, confront it and tackle it effectively. We only get one life so we should make the most out of it and don’t waste it doing wicked acts. We should pay attention to our decisions and acts in this Duniya that bring us prosperity in both realms. We need to pinpoint all of the reasons that are impeding our progress. Because if we don't diagnose the variables, we won't be capable of taking proper measures, and taking correct measures is the only way to succeed.

We all possess habits in our lives that impede our ability to develop and enhance our standard of living. Unhealthy habits are stumbling blocks of our life. We must overcome these difficulties if we want to be productive. In order to become a great Muslim, it is necessary to eliminate all of our bad habits that Allah (SWT) and Hazrat Muhammad (S.A.W) dislikes. So, here’s a list of bad habits that you should avoid in order to be a successful Muslim:

1.Lack of Credence in Allah (SWT)

We should not forget that Allah Almighty is our creator and He knows what is best for us. In every situation, we must not weaken our reliance upon Him. Reliance upon Allah Almighty can make you stay away from evil acts and you will know that Allah (SWT) has a better plan for you. Be it in any sense food, job, peace, etc. He will surely never leave you alone. So, stop being pessimistic and put your reliance on Him.

It is stated in a Hadith where 'Umar (May Allah be pleased with him) said:

Lack of Credence in Allah (SWT)

2.You Do Not Pray Salah Punctually

Do you pray your daily Namaz on time? Or do you just delay it because of worldly activities? This is such a bad habit that people don’t even realize. The sole reason to put it off is due to laziness. They tend to prefer their other works on Salah and Allah (SWT) does not like it. You must pray your Salah on time to become a good Muslim. Individuals who want to be successful pray Namaz on time. Take a look at what Allah (SWT) has said regarding it. It is mentioned in a Quranic verse that:

You Do Not Pray Salah Punctually

It is stated in a Hadith narrated by `Abdullah:

3.Being Friend with Negative People

Emotions spread like wildfire. Do not let yourself walk in the path of others. Having friends with wrong mindsets can lead you to do bad activities. There is a famous phrase that “A man is known by the company he keeps”. Negative people will have a bad influence on you and can make you commit bad deeds as well. Go around with people that have great social, professional, and communal goals and dreams so that it reflects on you in a positive way. Interact with individuals that inspire you rather than those who demotivate you. Hazrat Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) reported:

Being Friend with Negative People

4.Prompt Giving Up

Don't get disheartened if you lose. Allah did not guarantee that you will receive something today or not. He said to have patience and vowed that you will definitely get it someday when it’s best for you. Instead of giving up we should put our maximum effort and put our faith in Allah (SWT) and should keep waiting for the right time.

Abu Huraira reported Allah's Messenger (?) as saying:

Prompt Giving Up

5.Jealousy Instincts

Rather than feeling jealous of others' accomplishments, encourage those in becoming successful. Feel glad when others succeed. To become a great Muslim one must be happy in what others do as jealousy. It is mentioned in Quran Surah Falaq:

Jealousy Instincts

6.Breaking Off Ties with Family

Islam encourages the protection of familial relationships due to the significant impact it has on attaining social cohesiveness and sustaining solidarity and affection amongst Muslims. It is narrated by Jubair bin Mut`im:

Breaking Off Ties with Family

Moreover, in another Hadith Narrated Anas bin Malik:

7.You Do Not Fast in Ramadan

Fasting in Ramadan is obligatory for Muslims but some people skip it. A good Muslim should not skip fasting instead try to make the best of it by reciting Quran, Salah, doing charity, and many other virtuous acts. One should necessarily fast in Ramadan and to avoid bad and unhealthy activities they can go to perform Umrah in ramadan. Because performing Umrah in this Holy month is equivalent in rewards as Hajj. It will also help you to seek forgiveness and make you a good human being as well. Abu Huraira narrated that:

You Do Not Fast in Ramadan

8.Neglecting Self-Care

It is about spending time on yourself. In whatever you do, pursue the satisfaction of Akhira.

Do you look after your body? Do you keep it strong and healthy? Successful individuals exercise, eat healthily and maintain good hygiene. Abu Huraira reported Allah's Messenger (S.A.W) as saying:

Neglecting Self-Care

Everyone wants to be a good and successful Muslim but the question is how much effort we put out to achieve this goal? The above-mentioned aspects aren't beyond our capability. All we have to do is adopt them into our everyday routines and practice them deliberately. Also, don't try to complete everything at once. Give yourself time and then accomplish it.
